Syllable division
VCCV words: divide between the consonants
The answer
In a VCCV word, two consonants stand between two vowels, and you divide between them: rab/bit, nap/kin, mag/net. Our lexicon has 483 two-syllable VCCV words, shown divided: 156 with a doubled consonant and 327 with two different ones.
How does it work?
VCCV is the first division pattern students learn and the most dependable. Label the vowels V and the consonants between them C, and the split goes in the middle. A digraph like sh, th or ck counts as one consonant, because its letters stay together, so "jacket" is not a VCCV word. A blend can split: in ad/mit, the d and m go to different syllables. The case to watch is a long vowel before a blend, as in se/cret, which we leave off this list.

How do you teach it?
Teach the routine before the label. Students put a dot under each vowel, look at the letters between, and if there are two consonants, draw the line between them. Then they read each syllable and blend. Start with doubled letters (rab/bit, muf/fin), where the split is obvious, then move to different consonants (nap/kin, sub/ject).
"Dot the vowels in 'tablet'. A, e. What's between them? B and l. Two consonants. Draw the line between them: tab/let. Read the first syllable: closed, 'tab'. Then 'let'. Tablet."
What is the common error, and the fix?
Students try to read the whole word at once and guess. Others split in the wrong place: "ra/bbit". The fix is the routine, every time, until it runs on its own: dot the vowels, count the consonants between, draw the line, read each part.
Sort it: a hands-on activity
Write VCCV words on strips and have students cut each one at the split, read each half and tape the halves back together. Mix in two VCV words (robot, wagon) to see who checks the count before cutting.
How this list was built
Every word comes from our lexicon of about 19,000 common words, each checked against a pronouncing dictionary and split into spelling units. Words a student meets in our assessments and progress-monitoring probes are left out, so practicing a list never rehearses a test. The lexicon gives syllable counts but not boundaries, so each split is worked out from the consonant and vowel units between the first two vowel sounds, using a long or short first vowel to choose V/CV or VC/V, and checked by hand. Words where that method is unreliable are left out. Compound splits come from the two words that make up the compound.
"Readable after" is the first lesson in the lesson sequence at which our decodability engine finds every sound-spelling in the word taught; "not taught" means the word has a spelling the sequence does not cover, so it is read with help. You can check your own lists and passages with the free decodable text checker.
Questions people ask
What does VCCV mean?
Vowel, consonant, consonant, vowel: the letters around the split in a two-syllable word like napkin. It tells you where to divide: between the two consonants.
Do digraphs count as one consonant?
Yes. Sh, ch, th, ph, wh and ck stay together, so each counts as one. Jacket divides jack/et, not as a VCCV word.
Is VCCV always divided between the consonants?
Almost. When the first vowel is long and the consonants form a blend, the blend can stay together: se/cret, a/pron. We leave those words off this list, so all 483 examples divide the standard way.
When are VCCV words taught?
Usually late in first grade or in second grade, once students read closed syllables fluently. Older students who struggle with long words benefit from the same routine.
