Glossary
Closed syllable
A closed syllable ends in a consonant and has a short vowel, as in cat, rabbit (rab) or picnic (pic).
It is the most common syllable type in English and the first one taught. Knowing it lets a student predict that the vowel will be short.
Why it matters for the record
Syllable types are a good unit for review because they generalise across many words.
