Word parts

Word parts and what they mean

Prefixes, suffixes and roots for readers past basic phonics, from grade 3 up and for older readers who still find long words hard. Each part has a short meaning and words built from it as word sums.

In short

Teach a part, then build words with it and take them apart: re + port + er → reporter. When a spelling changes as parts join, say so: hope + ing → hoping drops the e.

Original word lists and meanings written by Literacy Trail.

English spelling has three layers. Teach them in this order, and show every word as a sum of its parts: re + port + er → reporter.
