Glossary

Open syllable

An open syllable ends in a vowel, which is usually long, as in go, me or the first syllable of robot.

Open syllables pair with closed syllables to explain a great deal of two-syllable spelling. Students learn to split words and read each part.

Why it matters for the record

Track open and closed syllables as separate skills; students often secure one before the other.
