How do you teach long o words?
Start with open o (go, no, so) and o_e. Then teach oa in the middle of words (boat, road) and ow at the end (snow, grow). "Oa likes the middle; ow likes the end." Show the -old and -ost words (cold, most) as their own small family, since the o is long without a second vowel.
What mistake do students make with long o words?
In spelling, students write ow in the middle (bowt for boat). Position helps. In reading, ow is the trap: it also says /ow/ in cow. Teach both sounds and the flex: "Try /ō/; if it isn't a word, try /ow/."
Where do long o words come in the sequence?
Open o and o_e come first. The -old and -ost words come next. Oa, ow and oe come with the vowel teams. In the sequence we use, the pattern is taught in Lesson 86.
Exceptions worth knowing
Though and dough spell /ō/ with ough. Sew uses ew. Some words with ow can be read both ways and mean different things (bow, row).

How this list was built
Every word comes from our lexicon of common English words, each split into spelling units and checked against a pronouncing dictionary, so a word is listed under the sound its spelling really makes. Words a student sees in our assessments are left out. The readable after lesson comes from our decodability engine, which checks each spelling unit and syllable pattern against the lesson sequence. You can run your own text through the same engine with the free decodable text checker.
