How do you teach ie words that say /ē/?

Teach ie /ē/ in two groups. First, words with ie in the middle (field, piece, chief, brief). Second, words where y changed to i before -es or -ed (baby, babies; carry, carried). "When y turns to i and we add es, the ie says /ē/." The second group makes up most of our list.

What mistake do students make with ie words that say /ē/?

Students spell piece as peace or peece. Teach homophones by meaning: piece of cake, peace and quiet. The old rhyme about i before e helps here but fails often elsewhere, so don't lean on it.

Where do ie words that say /ē/ come in the sequence?

Ie /ē/ in base words is usually taught late. The plural group comes with the y to i rule. In the sequence we use, the pattern is taught in Lesson 87.

Exceptions worth knowing

After c, ei is more common (receive, ceiling). Friend says /ĕ/, and pie says /ī/.

Decodable sentences

Every word in these sentences can be read at Lesson 87 or earlier, or is a heart word taught by then.

  • The babies are in the park.
  • Mom carries the puppies.
  • The ladies hurried to the bus.

Questions people ask

What are 5 ie words that say /ē/?
Brief, field, piece, fields, movie. Those are the five most common of the 319 words where ie says /ē/ in our checked list.
Is i before e except after c true?
Partly. It works for field and receive, but fails for weird, their, science and many more. Use it as a hint, not a rule.
Why does babies have ie?
Baby ends in consonant plus y. To add -es, y changes to i, and the new ie says /ē/.
When can a student read ie words that say /ē/?
Ie words that say /ē/ are taught at Lesson 87 in the lesson sequence we use. 0 of the 319 words on this page can be sounded out by then; the rest wait for a pattern taught later, and the tables show the lesson for each word.

How this list was built

Every word comes from our lexicon of common English words, each split into spelling units and checked against a pronouncing dictionary, so a word is listed under the sound its spelling really makes. Words a student sees in our assessments are left out. The readable after lesson comes from our decodability engine, which checks each spelling unit and syllable pattern against the lesson sequence. You can run your own text through the same engine with the free decodable text checker.
