How do you teach ei words?

Teach ei in two groups. "After c, ei usually says /ē/: receive, ceiling." Then the /ā/ group: vein, reign, rein. Many ei /ā/ words also have eigh, so teach them side by side.

What mistake do students make with ei words?

Students write ie for ei after c (recieve). The old rhyme helps here: after c, ei. In reading, flex between /ē/ and /ā/.

Where do ei words come in the sequence?

Ei is taught late, with other less common long a and long e spellings. In the sequence we use, the pattern is taught in Lesson 114.

Exceptions worth knowing

Weird, either, neither, seize and protein use ei for /ē/ without c. Their and heir use ei before r.

Decodable sentences

Every word in these sentences can be read at Lesson 114 or earlier, or is a heart word taught by then.

  • The vein is in my arm.
  • The veins in a leaf are thin.
  • Pull the reins.

When do you use ei instead of ie?
After c, ei is the usual choice for /ē/ (receive, ceiling). Elsewhere, ie is more common, with many exceptions.

When can a student read ei words?

How this list was built

Every word comes from our lexicon of common English words, each split into spelling units and checked against a pronouncing dictionary, so a word is listed under the sound its spelling really makes. Words a student sees in our assessments are left out. The readable after lesson comes from our decodability engine, which checks each spelling unit and syllable pattern against the lesson sequence. You can run your own text through the same engine with the free decodable text checker.
