Syllable type

R-controlled syllables

The answer

In an r-controlled syllable, the r right after a vowel changes its sound, so it is neither short nor long: car, her, bird, fork, turn, gar/den. Our lexicon has 314 one-syllable r-controlled words and 133 two-syllable words with one, shown divided.

How does it work?

R is the bossiest letter in English spelling. Put it right after a vowel and the vowel loses its usual sound: cat becomes cart, hen becomes her. Three spellings, er, ir and ur, all make the same sound, which makes this type easy to read and hard to spell. In two-syllable words, the r-controlled syllable most often comes second, usually as er: num/ber, win/ter, sis/ter.

How do you teach it?

Teach ar and or first, since each spells one clear sound. Then teach er, ir and ur together as three spellings of one sound, and give students a spelling default: er is by far the most common, especially at the end of a word. Practice reading by covering the r: read "ca", then add r and hear the vowel change.

"Here's 'garden'. Find the vowels: a, e. The a has an r right after it, so it's r-controlled: ar says /ar/. Split: gar/den. 'Gar', then 'den'. Garden. Notice we don't say a short a and then /r/. The a and r work as one."

What is the common error, and the fix?

Readers try to say the vowel short and then add /r/, so "car" comes out with a short a. Spellers swap er, ir and ur freely. The reading fix is to treat the vowel and the r as one unit, read in one go. The spelling fix is to learn the common ir and ur words and default to er when unsure.

Sort it: a hands-on activity

Sort r-controlled cards by sound: /ar/ (car, park), /or/ (fork, born) and /er/ (her, bird, turn). Then sort the /er/ pile again by spelling, er, ir and ur, and count which pile is biggest.

How this list was built

Every word comes from our lexicon of about 19,000 common words, each checked against a pronouncing dictionary and split into spelling units. Words a student meets in our assessments and progress-monitoring probes are left out, so practicing a list never rehearses a test. The lexicon gives syllable counts but not boundaries, so each split is worked out from the consonant and vowel units between the first two vowel sounds, using a long or short first vowel to choose V/CV or VC/V, and checked by hand. Words where that method is unreliable are left out. Compound splits come from the two words that make up the compound.

"Readable after" is the first lesson in the lesson sequence at which our decodability engine finds every sound-spelling in the word taught; "not taught" means the word has a spelling the sequence does not cover, so it is read with help. You can check your own lists and passages with the free decodable text checker.

Questions people ask

What is an r-controlled syllable?

A syllable where a vowel is followed by r, and the r changes the vowel's sound. The common spellings are ar, or, er, ir and ur.

Why do er, ir and ur sound the same?

Over centuries, those vowel sounds merged before r in most English accents. Spelling kept the older letters, so three spellings now share one sound.

Are air, ear and are r-controlled?

Yes. They are usually taught with the r-controlled type: hair, fear, care. Some programs call them r-controlled vowel teams.

Where do r-controlled syllables fall in longer words?

Often at the end, as er. Our list has 128 two-syllable words with the r-controlled syllable second, like ever, over, user, after.
