Syllable type

Vowel team syllables

The answer

A vowel team syllable has two or more letters spelling one vowel sound: rain, boat, light, ex/plain. Our lexicon has 798 one-syllable vowel team words and 77 two-syllable words with a vowel team syllable, shown divided.

How does it work?

Vowel teams are the largest and messiest syllable type. The teams include long vowel spellings (ai, ee, oa, igh), diphthongs (oi, ou, ow) and others (oo, au, aw), and several spell more than one sound, like ea in bead and bread. The type tells a student one thing for certain: the letters in a team stay together and are never split across two syllables. In two-syllable words the team usually sits in the second syllable, as in com/plain and ex/ceed.

How do you teach it?

Teach the syllable type after students know several teams as reading patterns. Highlight each team in one color so students see it as a unit. In two-syllable words, students mark the team first and then split around it, never through it.

"Find the vowel team in 'contain'. A-i, together. That team is one sound, long a. Now split the word: con/tain. Read the closed syllable first, 'con', then the vowel team syllable, 'tain'. Contain."

What is the common error, and the fix?

Students split teams, reading "re-ad" for read or "bo-at" for boat. Others read only the first letter of the team. The fix: before reading, circle every vowel team. A circled team is one unit with one sound, and the syllable line never cuts through a circle.

Sort it: a hands-on activity

Sort one-syllable vowel team cards by the sound of the team, not the spelling: long a (rain, play), long e (seed, team), long o (boat, snow) and other (cloud, boil, book). Seeing ow in two columns, snow and cow, teaches students to try both sounds.

How this list was built

Every word comes from our lexicon of about 19,000 common words, each checked against a pronouncing dictionary and split into spelling units. Words a student meets in our assessments and progress-monitoring probes are left out, so practicing a list never rehearses a test. The lexicon gives syllable counts but not boundaries, so each split is worked out from the consonant and vowel units between the first two vowel sounds, using a long or short first vowel to choose V/CV or VC/V, and checked by hand. Words where that method is unreliable are left out. Compound splits come from the two words that make up the compound.

"Readable after" is the first lesson in the lesson sequence at which our decodability engine finds every sound-spelling in the word taught; "not taught" means the word has a spelling the sequence does not cover, so it is read with help. You can check your own lists and passages with the free decodable text checker.

Questions people ask

What is a vowel team syllable?

A syllable where two, three or four letters spell one vowel sound: ai, ee, oa, igh, ou, oi, aw and others. The team stays together when you divide a word.

Are diphthongs vowel teams?

In the six syllable types, yes. Oi, oy, ou and ow (as in cow) count as vowel team syllables even though the sound glides.

Can one vowel team spell different sounds?

Yes. Ea says long e in bead, short e in bread and long a in great. Ow says long o in snow and a different vowel in cow. The syllable type holds; only the sound changes.

Why is the two-syllable list short?

We divide only words where our rules are reliable, and many vowel team words have a second team or an r-controlled vowel next to the first. Our list has 77 two-syllable words we can divide with confidence.
