Spelling rule

The y to i rule

The answer

When a word ends in a consonant and y, change the y to i before a suffix (baby, babies; happy, happiness), except before -ing (crying). After a vowel, keep the y (play, played). Our lexicon has 481 changed words and 7 exceptions.

When does the rule apply?

The letter before the y decides everything. After a consonant, y is acting as a vowel, and it turns into i when a suffix is added. After a vowel, y is part of a vowel team (ay, ey, oy) and stays put. The -ing exception has a practical reason: "criing" would put two i's side by side, and English avoids that. Our tables split the changed words by suffix, because students meet -ies and -ied first and -ier, -iest, -ily and -iness later.

How do you teach it?

Teach the plural and past forms first, since students see them most. Write "baby" and ask the class to spell "babies". Then put "monkey" next to it and ask why monkeys keeps its y. Let students find the difference themselves: a consonant before the y in baby, a vowel before the y in monkey.

"Our word is 'carry' and we're adding -ed. What letter comes before the y? r, a consonant. Is the suffix -ing? No. So the y changes to i: c-a-r-r-i-e-d. Now 'carrying'. The suffix is -ing, so the y stays, or we'd get two i's in a row."

What is the common error, and the fix?

Students write "babys", "cryed" and "happyness" when they skip the rule, and "plaied" or "criing" when they overapply it. The fix is two checks in order. What letter comes before the y? Is the suffix -ing?

Sort it: a hands-on activity

Make three columns: "change to i", "keep y: -ing" and "keep y: vowel before". Students draw base-plus-suffix cards (spy + es, enjoy + ed, fly + ing, lucky + ly, key + s), sort them and write each new word.

How this list was built

Every word comes from our lexicon of about 19,000 common words, each checked against a pronouncing dictionary and split into spelling units. Words a student meets in our assessments and progress-monitoring probes are left out, so practicing a list never rehearses a test. Rule groups are computed from each word's spelling units and its word sum (base plus suffix), then checked by hand; false word sums such as man + er for manner are removed.

"Readable after" is the first lesson in the lesson sequence at which our decodability engine finds every sound-spelling in the word taught; "not taught" means the word has a spelling the sequence does not cover, so it is read with help. You can check your own lists and passages with the free decodable text checker.

Questions people ask

Why do you keep the y before -ing?

Changing it would put two i's together (criing, studiing). English keeps the y so the word stays readable. Our list has 53 words like flying, trying, burying.

Why does played keep the y?

The y follows a vowel, so it belongs to the vowel team ay. Vowel teams stay together when a suffix is added. Our list has 108 of these, such as days, keys, pays.

What are the exceptions?

Our list finds 7: whys, dryer, slyly, dryness, shyness, slyness. A few vowel-plus-y words change as well: day becomes daily, and pay, lay and say become paid, laid and said.

Does y change to i before -ful and -ness?

Yes: beauty becomes beautiful and happy becomes happiness. Before -ish it usually stays: babyish.
