Morphology
Morphology is the study of the meaningful parts of words: prefixes, suffixes and base words, such as un-, -ing and help in unhelpful.
It comes later in most sequences and helps with reading longer words, spelling, and vocabulary. Knowing that -ed is one part explains why it is spelled the same in jumped, wanted and played.
Why it matters for the record
Track suffix rules (doubling, dropping e, changing y) as skills; they recur for years.
