Scope and sequence
A scope and sequence is the list of skills a program teaches (the scope) in the order it teaches them (the sequence).
In a phonics program it usually runs from letter sounds through short vowels, digraphs and blends to longer vowel patterns, syllable types and word parts. The order is deliberate: each skill leans on the ones before it.
Example
UFLI Foundations runs from Getting Ready lessons through Lesson 128, grouped into units.
Why it matters for the record
A student's place in the sequence is the single most useful fact about their instruction. Track the current lesson, not the date the program started.
Literacy Trail is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the University of Florida Literacy Institute. It contains no UFLI lesson content, only lesson names and order.
