Glossary
Decoding and encoding
Decoding is reading a word by turning letters into sounds; encoding is spelling a word by turning sounds into letters.
They are the same knowledge used in opposite directions, and encoding is usually the harder one. A good lesson practises both for every pattern.
Why it matters for the record
Rate them separately when they differ. A student who reads a pattern but cannot spell it has not finished with it.
