Segmenting
Segmenting is breaking a spoken word into its individual sounds, the skill behind spelling.
A student who can segment cat into three sounds can then choose a letter for each. Weak segmenting shows up as missing letters in spelling, especially in blends.

When spelling errors cluster in blends, check segmenting before reteaching the pattern.
