Spelling rule

Adding s or es

The answer

Add -es when a word ends in s, x, z, ch or sh (glasses, boxes, wishes), because the ending adds a syllable you can hear. Add plain -s to everything else (cats, plays). Our lexicon has 206 -es words and 4487 -s words that follow this.

When does the rule apply?

Students can hear this rule. Say "box" and then "boxes": the plural has an extra syllable, and that syllable needs a vowel, so the spelling is -es. Every ending on the -es list is a hissing or hushing sound, and another /s/ or /z/ cannot follow one of those without a vowel in between. The same rule covers verbs: he wishes, she fixes. Words ending in a consonant and y change to -ies, and some words ending in o take -es; both have their own place.

How do you teach it?

Teach -s first, then -es as a listening task. Say pairs, "cat, cats" and "dish, dishes", and ask students to clap the syllables. If the plural has one more clap, it gets -es. Then show the five endings in writing so students can predict the extra syllable before they spell.

"Let's make 'church' plural. Say it: churches. How many claps? Church-es, two. The singular had one. A new syllable means -es: c-h-u-r-c-h-e-s. Now 'book'. Books. Still one clap. Just -s."

What is the common error, and the fix?

Typical errors are "boxs", "wishs" and "buss", followed later by "dogses" from overcorrection. The fix is to say the word aloud with the ending. A new syllable you can hear means -es. No new syllable means -s.

Sort it: a hands-on activity

Put singular nouns on cards (fox, bench, cup, brush, gas, hat, kiss, quiz). Students say each plural and sort by the number of claps into -s or -es. Then they underline the last one or two letters of the -es words and find the five endings.

How this list was built

Every word comes from our lexicon of about 19,000 common words, each checked against a pronouncing dictionary and split into spelling units. Words a student meets in our assessments and progress-monitoring probes are left out, so practicing a list never rehearses a test. Rule groups are computed from each word's spelling units and its word sum (base plus suffix), then checked by hand; false word sums such as man + er for manner are removed.

"Readable after" is the first lesson in the lesson sequence at which our decodability engine finds every sound-spelling in the word taught; "not taught" means the word has a spelling the sequence does not cover, so it is read with help. You can check your own lists and passages with the free decodable text checker.

Questions people ask

Which words ending in o take -es?

A small group. Our list has 9, such as goes, echoes, heroes, potatoes. Many others, especially shortened and borrowed words, take plain -s: egos, zeros, photos, pros.

Why do some ch words take only -s?

When ch says /k/, there is no hushing sound to separate, so -s is enough. Our list has 2: monarchs, stomachs. Stomachs is the one students meet most.

What about words ending in y?

After a consonant, change y to i and add -es (baby, babies). After a vowel, just add -s (day, days). The y to i rule has the full lists.

Is the rule the same for verbs?

Yes. The verb ending follows the same pattern: he runs, she catches, it fizzes.
