How do you teach schwa words?
Students need two moves: read the vowel as short or long first, then relax it into a real word. "Read it as you see it: /lĕ-mŏn/. Now say it like a word: lemon. That lazy /ə/ is schwa." Practice with two-syllable words where the schwa is in the first syllable (about, again) and the last (pencil, lemon). The tables here group words by which vowel letter is the schwa.
What mistake do students make with schwa words?
In spelling, schwa is the hardest sound because it gives no clue to its letter. Students write lemin or pencal. Teach students to say the word in a spelling voice, stressing every syllable (/lĕ-mŏn/), and to link related words where the vowel is clear (comedy and comedian).
Where do schwa words come in the sequence?
Schwa comes up as soon as students read two-syllable words. Many programs name it in early lessons and teach it directly once multisyllable reading begins. In the sequence we use, the pattern is taught in Lesson 67b.
Exceptions worth knowing
Our list counts a vowel as schwa only when our pronouncing dictionary marks it as reduced. Some speakers say a clear short vowel in words like basket, and that's fine.
Decodable sentences
Every word in these sentences can be read at Lesson 67b or earlier, or is a heart word taught by then.
- The lemon is on top of the wagon.
- A rabbit can hop to the kitten.
- The kitten is in a basket.

How this list was built
Every word comes from our lexicon of common English words, each split into spelling units and checked against a pronouncing dictionary, so a word is listed under the sound its spelling really makes. Words a student sees in our assessments are left out. The readable after lesson comes from our decodability engine, which checks each spelling unit and syllable pattern against the lesson sequence. You can run your own text through the same engine with the free decodable text checker.
