How do you teach kn words?
Tell the history in one line; it makes the k stick. "Long ago people said the /k/ in knee. The sound went away, but the spelling stayed." Read kn words as a short set: knee, knit, knot, knock, know, knife. Since the sound gives no clue, practice spelling by meaning groups (knee, kneel; know, knowledge).
What mistake do students make with kn words?
Students read the k aloud (/k/-nock) or leave it off in spelling (nock). In reading, cover the k and ask what's left. In spelling, the list is short enough to drill with a quick card review. Point out that the word families share the k: know, known, knowledge.
Where do kn words come in the sequence?
Kn is usually taught with wr and mb in one lesson on silent letters, late in the phonics sequence. In the sequence we use, the pattern is taught in Lesson 98.
Exceptions worth knowing
Kn never says /k/ /n/ inside an English base word. In compounds like doorknob, kn still starts the second word part. Some names keep the old sound in other languages.
Decodable sentences
Every word in these sentences can be read at Lesson 98 or earlier, or is a heart word taught by then.

How this list was built
Every word comes from our lexicon of common English words, each split into spelling units and checked against a pronouncing dictionary, so a word is listed under the sound its spelling really makes. Words a student sees in our assessments are left out. The readable after lesson comes from our decodability engine, which checks each spelling unit and syllable pattern against the lesson sequence. You can run your own text through the same engine with the free decodable text checker.
