Grapheme
A grapheme is a letter or group of letters that spells one phoneme.
The sound at the start of ship is one phoneme and its grapheme is sh. Some phonemes have several graphemes: the long a sound can be spelled a, ai, ay, a-e and more.
Why it matters for the record
Phonics lessons are usually organized by grapheme. Recording the grapheme with the lesson lets review be by pattern rather than by lesson number.
