How do you teach ending blend words?

Ending blends are easier than beginning ones for most students, so many teachers start here. Build from a CVC word: ten, tent; ban, band. "Say ten. Now add /t/ to the end." Group the ending blends that use n and m first, since those are the most often missed. A gesture helps: one hand for the vowel, two fingers that close for the blend.

What mistake do students make with ending blend words?

The nasal before the final consonant gets dropped: wet for went, lap for lamp. The vowel absorbs the /n/ or /m/ so the student doesn't hear it. Have them feel the hum by holding their nose while saying went; it suddenly sounds wrong without the /n/.

Where do ending blend words come in the sequence?

Ending blends usually come with or just before beginning blends, after the short vowel reviews. In the sequence we use, the pattern is taught in Lesson 35c.

Exceptions worth knowing

Final nk and ng are not blends of n plus a consonant; n says /ng/. In words like hands and lamps, the s is a suffix. Ld and lt after a long vowel (cold, bolt) form their own pattern.

Decodable sentences

Every word in these sentences can be read at Lesson 35c or earlier, or is a heart word taught by then.

  • The kid can jump on the sand.
  • We went past the tent.
  • Mom left a gift on the desk.

Questions people ask

What are 5 ending blend words?
Act, and, ask, end, old. Those are the five most common of the 1,159 words that end in a consonant blend in our checked list.
What are ending blends?
Two consonants at the end of a word, each heard: -st, -nd, -nt, -mp, -sk, -sp, -ft, -lt, -ld, -lk, -lp, -pt, -ct and -xt.
Why do students drop the m in lamp?
The /m/ blends into the vowel before it. Say the word with the student and have them notice their lips closing before /p/.
When can a student read ending blend words?
Ending blend words are taught at Lesson 35c in the lesson sequence we use. 229 of the 1,159 words on this page can be sounded out by then; the rest wait for a pattern taught later, and the tables show the lesson for each word.

How this list was built

Every word comes from our lexicon of common English words, each split into spelling units and checked against a pronouncing dictionary, so a word is listed under the sound its spelling really makes. Words a student sees in our assessments are left out. The readable after lesson comes from our decodability engine, which checks each spelling unit and syllable pattern against the lesson sequence. You can run your own text through the same engine with the free decodable text checker.
