Blend
A consonant blend is two or three consonants next to each other whose sounds are all heard, such as bl, st, str.
Unlike a digraph, each letter in a blend keeps its own sound. Blends are hard for many students because several sounds have to be held and produced in quick succession.
Example
The st in stop, the mp in lamp, the str in strap.
Why it matters for the record
Trouble with blends often traces back to short vowels or segmenting. Check underneath before reteaching the blend.
