How do you teach all, oll and ull words?

Teach these as chunks after the FLSZ rule. "All says /all/. Oll says /ōll/. Ull says /ŏŏll/ in pull." Build families: ball, call, fall, hall, tall; roll, toll, poll; pull, full, bull. Students read them quickly once the chunk is known.

What mistake do students make with all, oll and ull words?

Students read ball with a short a. Show the chunk on a card: "All is a team. It says /all/." For ull, many short u words (dull, gull, hull) keep /ŭ/, so prompt the flex.

Where do all, oll and ull words come in the sequence?

All, oll and ull are usually taught right after the FLSZ rule, early in the digraph unit. In the sequence we use, the pattern is taught in Lesson 43.

Exceptions worth knowing

Dull, gull and hull have short u before ll. Doll keeps short o. Shall keeps short a.

How this list was built

Every word comes from our lexicon of common English words, each split into spelling units and checked against a pronouncing dictionary, so a word is listed under the sound its spelling really makes. Words a student sees in our assessments are left out. The readable after lesson comes from our decodability engine, which checks each spelling unit and syllable pattern against the lesson sequence. You can run your own text through the same engine with the free decodable text checker.
