How do you teach the root poly?

Teach poly next to mono so the student has a pair: one and many. Math class is the best place for it. A polygon is a shape with many angles, a polynomial has many terms, and a polyhedron is a solid with many faces. Ask the student to draw a polygon and count its sides. Then show polysyllable, which is handy in reading class, and ask for an example, such as caterpillar.

A quick routine

Write mono and poly on two cards. Say, "Mono means one. Poly means many. I'll say a word and you hold up a card." Read monorail, polygon, monologue, polysyllable, monotone and polymath. After each, the student explains the choice in a short sentence, such as "poly, because a polygon has many sides." Close by dictating polygon and polyester.

What do students mix up with poly?

Monopoly looks as if it should mean one and many at once, and students puzzle over it. The poly in monopoly comes from a different Greek word that means sell, so a monopoly is one seller. Polite is another look-alike; it comes from a Latin word meaning polished. The y in poly is a vowel, a sign of Greek spelling, so have the student say the parts slowly before blending.
