Words with the Greek root morph
The list runs from shorter, common words to longer ones. The bands are a rough guide built from syllable count and how common each word is in our word list, not a grade-level standard. Read each word, then its word sum.

Where does morph sit in a word?
A root can come first, last or in the middle. Students who only look at the start of a word miss half of these.
- At the start:
- morphs, morphed, morphing, morphology, morphological, morphologist
- In the middle:
- polymorphic
- At the end:
- polymorph
How do you teach the root morph?
This root pays off twice. It names the whole subject of word parts, morphology, and it gives students the word morpheme, the smallest piece of a word that carries meaning. Tell them they have been working with morphemes all along: re, port, er. Then move to metamorphosis, which students know from caterpillars and tadpoles. A caterpillar changes its shape completely. Morph is the shape, and the parts around it tell you the shape is changing.
A quick routine
Say, "Morph means shape. In every word, what shape is it, or what shape is changing?" Read morphing (one shape turning into another), metamorphosis (a caterpillar becoming a butterfly) and amorphous (no clear shape, like a blob of clay). Have the student split morphology into morph, o and logy and give both meanings. End by asking for the morphemes in a word you choose, such as unhelpful.
What do students mix up with morph?
The ph says /f/, and students who haven't met that spelling yet write morf. Tell them ph is the Greek way to spell /f/, and every word in this family keeps it. A second mix-up: morph and form mean nearly the same thing, but form is Latin. Transform and metamorphosis both describe a change of shape; one uses the Latin part and the other uses the Greek one.
