Spelling rule

Soft c and soft g

The answer

C says /s/ and g usually says /j/ when the next letter is e, i or y (cent, city, gem, giant). Before other letters they keep their hard sounds. Our lexicon has 324 soft c words, 195 soft g words and 30 hard exceptions.

When does the rule apply?

This rule matters for reading as much as spelling. A student who sees c or g has to look one letter ahead before saying anything. C is close to perfectly regular. G is less reliable: many very common words keep a hard g before e or i (get, give, girl, begin), and they are some of the first words students read. Teach soft c first, then soft g with its exceptions in view.

How do you teach it?

Make the look-ahead step physical. Students put one finger on the c or g and a second finger on the next letter. If the second finger lands on e, i or y, the first letter goes soft. Practice with lists that mix hard and soft: cat, cent, cot, city, cup, cycle. Then do the same with g.

"Here's a new word: c-e-l-l. Before you read it, look at the letter after c. It's e. So c says /s/. Read it: cell. Now g-i-a-n-t. Letter after g? i. G usually says /j/ before i: giant. Usually, not always. G-i-f-t is 'gift'."

What is the common error, and the fix?

Readers say "kent" for cent and give gem a hard g. Spellers write "sity" and "jiant", which are reasonable guesses from sound. The reading fix is the two-finger look-ahead. The spelling fix is knowing that /s/ before e, i or y is often c, and /j/ before e, i or y is often g.

Sort it: a hands-on activity

Set up four columns: hard c, soft c, hard g and soft g. Students sort 24 cards, then highlight the letter after each c or g. The hard g column will collect a few words with e or i after the g; those are the exceptions to learn.

How this list was built

Every word comes from our lexicon of about 19,000 common words, each checked against a pronouncing dictionary and split into spelling units. Words a student meets in our assessments and progress-monitoring probes are left out, so practicing a list never rehearses a test. Rule groups are computed from each word's spelling units and its word sum (base plus suffix), then checked by hand; false word sums such as man + er for manner are removed.

"Readable after" is the first lesson in the lesson sequence at which our decodability engine finds every sound-spelling in the word taught; "not taught" means the word has a spelling the sequence does not cover, so it is read with help. You can check your own lists and passages with the free decodable text checker.

Questions people ask

Why doesn't g always say /j/ before e or i?

Many common g words came into English from Old English and Norse, where g stayed hard: get, give, girl. Words from French and Latin tend to follow the soft g pattern. Our list shows 30 hard g exceptions, such as get, girl, give, begin.

Is c ever hard before e, i or y?

Not in any common word in our lexicon. That is why c is the easier half of the rule to teach.

What is the e doing in words like dance and change?

It keeps the c or g soft. Without it, the words would end in hard sounds. That e is silent and does not make the vowel long.

How does soft c connect to other spelling rules?

It explains why k, not c, starts words like kit and kept, and why some words keep their e before -able, as in noticeable.
