Phonics pattern

Mixed short vowel words

Once every short vowel has been taught, mixed lists check that the student is reading the vowel rather than guessing it from the last list. This is the point where short vowel reading becomes reliable.

Spellings: a, e, i, o, u

How to teach it

  1. Warm up with the five short vowel sounds, said and written, in a random order rather than a, e, i, o, u.
  2. Read mixed lists where neighboring words differ by the vowel only (sap, sip, sop), and sort a few words by vowel sound.
  3. Dictate mixed words, then read a short decodable text and note which vowel, if any, still causes errors.

Practice words

Read them across, then down. Point under each word as it is read.

  • bag
  • gap
  • bib
  • kin
  • sip
  • pop
  • lob
  • cop
  • dud
  • pug
  • rut
  • bet

Decodable sentences

  • Dad got a big bag of nuts.
  • Can Kim jog to the bus?
  • Ben hid the pen in his cap.

Spoken warm-ups

No print. Say the prompt; the student answers aloud. Sounds are written between slashes.

Spoken warm-ups for Mixed short vowel words
You sayThe student says
Listen: /j/ /o/ /g/. What word?jog
Say ‘hut’. Say each sound./h/ /u/ /t/
Say ‘pin’. Change /i/ to /a/. What word?pan

Common errors

  • One vowel standing in for another, most often e and i. Note which pair it is and practice that pair alone for a few sessions.
  • Reading quickly but guessing. Slow down for accuracy first; speed follows once every word is decoded.
  • Correct in lists, wrong in sentences. Read the same words in a sentence the same day so the skill carries into text.

Which lessons teach this

If you teach UFLI Foundations, this pattern comes up in these 8 lessons. Teach from your own manual.

Literacy Trail is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the University of Florida Literacy Institute. It contains no UFLI lesson content, only lesson names and order.

Questions people ask

Are these words from an assessment?
No. The practice words, sentences and warm-ups here are written for teaching and are kept separate from the words in the Literacy Trail assessments, so practicing never teaches the test.
When is a student ready for mixed short vowel words?
When they read and spell the pattern before it (short e words) accurately and without prompting, most of the time. Keep reviewing earlier patterns for two minutes a session while the new one settles.
How long should practice take?
A few minutes a day beats one long session a week. Read the word list once or twice, dictate three or four words, and read a sentence or two. Rate how it went and bring the pattern back on a short schedule if it is shaky.
