When to use it

When a student reads words correctly but slowly and word by word.

Materials

  • A short passage the student can read with few errors

Steps

  1. Get ready

    1. Choose a passage the student read once already, or one they can read with only a few errors.

  2. I do

    1. Read the first paragraph aloud at a natural pace, with expression, while the student follows with a finger.

  3. We do

    1. Read the same part together, matching your voices.

  4. You do

    1. The student reads the whole passage alone. Note any missed words and go over them after.

      Student: Reads the passage aloud.

    2. The student reads it again, twice more. Before each reading, name one thing to work on: smoother, a steady pace, or reading the punctuation.

  5. Check

    1. Ask the student which reading sounded best and why.

If the student...

  • Misreads a word.

When the student reaches a full stop, go back to the word, say it or have the student blend it, and have them reread the sentence.

Say: Look at this word again. Now read that sentence once more.

  • Reads fast but skips words.

Ask the student to point under each word on the next reading. Praise accuracy over speed.

Tips

  • Three or four readings is plenty. More than that and attention drops.
  • In a group, students can read the same passage in pairs, taking turns.
