When to use it

In small groups, so every student reads aloud much more than they could in a round.

Materials

  • One copy of the text per student
  • A card with the partner jobs

Steps

  1. Get ready

    1. Pair students. Show the two jobs: reader and coach. The coach follows with a finger and helps only after a short wait.

  2. I do

    1. With one student, act out a turn. You are the coach: you wait, then give a hint like look at the vowel, and then tell the word if needed.

  3. We do

    1. Pairs read one page while you move between them, coaching the coaches.

  4. You do

    1. Pairs keep reading, switching jobs at each page or paragraph.

Student: Reads aloud, then coaches the partner.

  5. Check

    1. Listen to each pair for a minute. Ask each student to tell their partner one thing they read well.

If the student...

  • The coach jumps in with the word right away.

Pause the pair. Show a quiet count to three before helping, then have the reader try the word again with the coach waiting.

Tips

  • Pair a slightly stronger reader with a slightly weaker one, not the strongest with the weakest.
  • Have the stronger reader go first so the partner hears the text before reading it.
