When to use it

When compound words are taught, usually the first longer words a student reads.

Materials

  • The word list
  • Cards with small words that join, such as sun, set, cat, fish

Steps

Shown with example words: word sunset; words sunset, bathtub, catfish.

  1. Get ready

    1. Put two small word cards side by side and read them.

  2. I do

    1. Push the two cards together and read the new word. Then show sunset written as one, mark where one small word ends and the next begins, and read it.

Say: Two little words make one big word. I find the line, read each part, then read it together.

  3. We do

    1. Do the next word together: find the two words, split, read.

  4. You do

    1. The student splits and reads each word in sunset, bathtub, catfish, and says how the two parts give the meaning.

Student: Draws the line, reads the parts, reads the word.

  5. Check

    1. Read the list in a new order without lines.

If the student...

  • Splits the word in the wrong place.

Ask the student to find a small word they know at the start. Move the line after it, read both parts with them, then they read the full word alone.

Tips

  • Some compounds hide a pattern the student does not know yet. Check the list first.
  • One to one, let the student make silly compounds with the cards and read them.
