When to use it

For students who can read the words but do not stop to check whether the text makes sense.

Materials

  • A text split into short chunks
  • A card for each of the four moves

Steps

  1. Get ready

    1. Show the four cards and say what each move is for.

  2. I do

    1. For the first chunk, do all four moves aloud: guess what comes next, fix a word or idea you were unsure of, ask a question, sum it up in a sentence.

  3. We do

    1. For the next chunk, the student does one move and you do the others. Pass a card to them each time.

  4. You do

    1. The student leads all four moves for the next chunks while you prompt only when needed.

Student: Predicts, clears up a confusion, asks a question and summarizes.

  5. Check

    1. At the end, ask which move helped them most with this text.

If the student...

  • Asks only questions with one-word answers.

Model a question that starts with why or how, have the student try one about the same part, and continue with the chunk.

Tips

  • In a group, give each student one card per chunk and rotate the cards.
  • Short chunks work best at first: a paragraph or two.
