How do you teach qu words?

Teach q and u as inseparable. "Q always brings u along. Together they say /kw/." Make a single qu card so the student never sees q alone. Blend it as two quick sounds: /kw/ /ĭ/ /k/, quick. Read quit, quiz, quack, then longer words such as quiet and equal once vowel patterns allow.

What mistake do students make with qu words?

Students spell quick as kwik or cwik. That shows they heard both sounds, which is the hard part. Tell them, "When you hear /kw/, write qu." In reading, a student may say /k/ /ŭ/ for qu; point to the card and say, "Partners."

Where do qu words come in the sequence?

Qu is usually taught with the alphabet letters, near the end of the single consonant lessons, before the short vowel reviews. In the sequence we use, the pattern is taught in Lesson 32.

Exceptions worth knowing

In unique, antique and technique, qu says /k/ and is followed by a silent e. In words like liquor and conquer the u is silent too. Q without u appears only in a few borrowed names and words.

Decodable sentences

Every word in these sentences can be read at Lesson 32 or earlier, or is a heart word taught by then.

  • Can the kid quit?
  • Quit the quiz and get up.
  • The quilt is in the box.

Questions people ask

What are 5 qu words?
Quit, queue, quick, quite, quits. Those are the five most common of the 217 words with qu in our checked list.
Is qu a blend or a digraph?
Qu spells two sounds, /k/ and /w/, so it acts like a blend. It is taught as one unit because q almost never appears without u.
Why does q always have a u after it?
English took the qu spelling from French and Latin, where u followed q. The habit stuck, so qu works as a pair.
When can a student read qu words?
Qu words are taught at Lesson 32 in the lesson sequence we use. 10 of the 217 words on this page can be sounded out by then; the rest wait for a pattern taught later, and the tables show the lesson for each word.

How this list was built

Every word comes from our lexicon of common English words, each split into spelling units and checked against a pronouncing dictionary, so a word is listed under the sound its spelling really makes. Words a student sees in our assessments are left out. The readable after lesson comes from our decodability engine, which checks each spelling unit and syllable pattern against the lesson sequence. You can run your own text through the same engine with the free decodable text checker.
