When do these words become readable?

The lessons where the most words on this page become decodable. Words marked not in the sequence have a spelling the sequence never teaches as a pattern.

How do you teach i_e words?

Use pairs: kit and kite, pin and pine, rip and ripe. "The e is silent, and the i says its name." Then mix i_e with a_e so the student reads the vowel each time instead of predicting it. I_e words with blends (smile, slide, stripe) give strong practice once the pattern is known.

What mistake do students make with i_e words?

The same error as a_e: reading the short vowel before spotting the e, so kite becomes kit. The habit fix is the same: look at the end first. In spelling, students may write igh or y for /ī/ once they know those. For now, tell them: in the middle of a one-syllable word, i_e is the most common choice.

Where do i_e words come in the sequence?

I_e follows a_e, usually one lesson later. In the sequence we use, the pattern is taught in Lesson 55.

Exceptions worth knowing

Give and live (the verb) keep a short i. In machine and police, i says /ē/. Words ending in -ice and -ige wait for soft c and g.

Decodable sentences

Every word in these sentences can be read at Lesson 55 or earlier, or is a heart word taught by then.

  • I like my bike.
  • It is time to ride.
  • The kite is on the vine.

Questions people ask

What are 5 i_e words?
Ice, bite, file, fine, fire. Those are the five most common of the 596 words where i_e says /ī/ in our checked list.
What are some i_e words?
Bike, like, time, ride, kite, line, five and smile.
Why does live have two sounds?
Live the verb (I live here) has a short i. Live the adjective (a live wire) has a long i. The spelling is the same; the meaning decides.
When can a student read i_e words?
I_e words are taught at Lesson 55 in the lesson sequence we use. 172 of the 596 words on this page can be sounded out by then; the rest wait for a pattern taught later, and the tables show the lesson for each word.

How this list was built

Every word comes from our lexicon of common English words, each split into spelling units and checked against a pronouncing dictionary, so a word is listed under the sound its spelling really makes. Words a student sees in our assessments are left out. The readable after lesson comes from our decodability engine, which checks each spelling unit and syllable pattern against the lesson sequence. You can run your own text through the same engine with the free decodable text checker.
