How do you teach -ed ending words?
Teach it as one spelling with three sounds. "We always write ed. It says /t/, /d/ or /ĭd/." Have the student read the base word, then add the ending. After t or d, it says /ĭd/ (wanted, landed). After a quiet sound like p, k or s, it says /t/ (jumped). After a voiced sound, /d/ (played). Sort the words on this page into three columns.
What mistake do students make with -ed ending words?
In spelling, students write what they hear: jumpt, playd. Teach that the past tense ending is always spelled ed. In reading, students add a syllable to every word (/jump-ĭd/). Have them check: does the base end in t or d? If not, no extra syllable.
Where do -ed ending words come in the sequence?
The -ed ending is usually taught after -s and -es, before -ing and the doubling rule. In the sequence we use, the pattern is taught in Lesson 64.
Exceptions worth knowing
Irregular past tense verbs (went, saw, ran) don't use -ed. Some adjectives keep /ĭd/ after other sounds: naked, wicked, crooked. Doubling and drop-e words (hopped, hoped) have their own spelling rules.
Decodable sentences

How this list was built
Every word comes from our lexicon of common English words, each split into spelling units and checked against a pronouncing dictionary, so a word is listed under the sound its spelling really makes. Words a student sees in our assessments are left out. The readable after lesson comes from our decodability engine, which checks each spelling unit and syllable pattern against the lesson sequence. You can run your own text through the same engine with the free decodable text checker.
