Where does ten sit in a word?
A root can come first, last or in the middle. Students who only look at the start of a word miss half of these.
- At the start:
- tenant
- In the middle:
- container, containers, retainer, sustainable, retention, continuous, continual, continent
- At the end:
- contain, retain, sustain, detain, continue, content
How do you teach the root ten?
This root hides behind several spellings, so start with the one students see most: tain. A container contains, a retainer holds your teeth, and a dam can retain water. Once tain feels solid, show how it turns into ten in retention and tin in continent. A continent is land that holds together. Continue means to hold on to the same path and keep going.
A quick routine
Hold a cup and say, "This container contains water. Ten and tain mean hold." Write con + tain, re + tain, sus + tain. The student joins each sum and says what is held: "A container holds things. Retain means hold on to." Then show retention and ask, "What happened to tain?" Let the student notice the spelling change before you name it.
What do students mix up with ten?
Attain looks like a tain word but comes from the root for touch, so it means to reach, not to hold. Stain, captain and mountain have no link at all. Watch the spelling tent, too: content holds things inside, but extent comes from the stretch root. Always ask which meaning fits.
