Where does tact sit in a word?
A root can come first, last or in the middle. Students who only look at the start of a word miss half of these.
- At the start:
- tactful, tactfully, tactless, tangible
- In the middle:
- intangible
- At the end:
- contact, contacts, contacted, contacting, intact
How do you teach the root tact?
Let the student touch the desk, then say contact. Two things touch. Intact is the clever one: in means not, so intact means nothing touched it and it is still whole. Tactful is a stretch for younger students. Explain it as handling a feeling gently, the way you'd touch a bruise. Then show the tang spelling in tangible, something real enough to touch.
A quick routine
Write tact in a box. Say, "Tact means touch. Every word today has touching in it, even when the touch is gentle." Hand over four words: contact, intact, tactful, tangible. The student reads each and finishes, "It's about touching because..." Then do one quick sort: things that are tangible (a book, a coin) and things that are intangible (a promise, an idea).
What do students mix up with tact?
Tack, as in a thumbtack, sounds the same but is a different word. Tactic and tactics look like the root too, but they come from a Greek word about arranging an army. Contagious does belong: an illness spreads by touch. If a student lists tackle or tactic, say, "Good spelling eye. Does touching fit the meaning?"
