Where does rect sit in a word?
A root can come first, last or in the middle. Students who only look at the start of a word miss half of these.
- At the start:
- rectangle, rectangles, rectangular
- In the middle:
- correction, corrections, correctly, correctness
- At the end:
- correct, correcting
How do you teach the root rect?
Draw a rectangle and trace one side with your finger. Straight. Then point to a corner. Right angle. That gives the student both halves of the meaning in one picture. Move to correct: when you correct a spelling, you make it right. Write cor + rect and show that con changed to cor before the r, which is why correct has two r's. Direct comes last, because the first part has worn down and is hard to see.
A quick routine
Put correct, rectangle and direction on the board. Say, "Rect means straight or right. Find rect, then tell me which meaning fits." The student underlines rect and answers "right" or "straight" for each word. A direction is the straight way to go. Then dictate correction and rectangular. Ask, "Why two r's in correction?" The answer you want: "Con turned into cor."
What do students mix up with rect?
Students often read incorrect as in + cor + rect and lose track of the parts. Build it in two steps: correct first, then add in. Watch also for words that only look close, such as erect and resurrect. They do contain the root, but they aren't good teaching words for this age, so leave them for later.
