Where does fin sit in a word?
A root can come first, last or in the middle. Students who only look at the start of a word miss half of these.
- At the start:
- final, finals, finalist, finalists
- At the end:
- define, defined, defining, redefine, confine, confined, refine, refined, ultrafine
How do you teach the root fin?
Fin means end or limit. The plain place to start is final, the last one, and finish, which means to bring to an end. Then move to define. To define a word is to set the limits of what it means. Confine means to keep something inside limits. Infinite is the payoff word: in means not, so infinite has no end. Students who see that are pleased with themselves.
A quick routine
Draw a line with a dot at the end and say, "Fin means end. Every word today has an end or a limit in it." Write final, finish and confine, and ask the student where the end is in each. Then write infinite and ask, "What does in do to fin?" Let the student explain it before you confirm. Close by dictating define and defining, and point out the dropped e.
What do students mix up with fin?
Fin is also a body part on a fish, and that fin is an old English word, not this root. Finger and find just start with the same letters. Students may also be surprised that fine (a penalty) is related to fin: it once meant a payment that ends a matter. Share that only if they ask. The everyday meaning of fine, as in okay, is the same root too, but explaining that can wait.
Some of these words change spelling where the parts join. The spelling rules pages cover dropping e, doubling and changing y to i. For the sounds inside these words, see the phonics word lists.
