Where does cogn sit in a word?
A root can come first, last or in the middle. Students who only look at the start of a word miss half of these.
- At the start:
- cognitive, cognition
- In the middle:
- recognize, recognized, recognizes, recognizing, recognizable, unrecognizable, recognition, precognition
How do you teach the root cogn?
Recognize is the anchor word, and almost every student uses it already. Split it on the board: re + cogn + ize. Re means again, so to recognize a face is to know it again. Then show recognition with the cognit spelling, and talk about the two meanings: knowing someone on sight, and being noticed for good work. Save cognitive and cognition for older students, who meet them in science and health class.
A quick routine
Say, "Cogn means know. Who can you recognize from across the playground?" Take two answers. Write recognize, recognizable and unrecognizable in a stack. The student reads each, then peels the parts from the outside in: "Un means not, able means can be, so unrecognizable means you can't know it again." Finish by dictating recognition and checking the cognit spelling.
What do students mix up with cogn?
Students often misspell recognize as reconize, because the g is easy to skip in fast speech. Showing the root fixes it: the word is re + cogn + ize, and cogn needs its g. A second slip is reading cognitive with a long o. The o is short, as in cog.
Some of these words change spelling where the parts join. The spelling rules pages cover dropping e, doubling and changing y to i. For the sounds inside these words, see the phonics word lists.
