How do you teach the prefix super-?

Students already own superhero, so start there and ask what makes a hero super. The answer is powers above a normal person's. That gives you the meaning: above, or more than usual. Then show the place meaning with superscript, the small number written above the line in math. Supervise is a good stretch word: super (over) plus vise (see), to watch over.

A quick routine

Write super on the board. Say, "Super means above, or more than usual. Every word I show you has something above the normal." Show superhero, supersonic, superscript and supervise. For each, the student finishes the sentence, "It is above..." (a normal person, the speed of sound, the line, the workers). Then the student writes one super word of their own and explains it.

What do students mix up with super-?

Students know super as a plain word meaning great, so they may think every super word is a compliment. Supervise and superscript are neutral. Superb and superior come from the same Latin word, but they have no base to show. Superintendent is long but works like supervise: someone who looks over a school district.

Some of these words change spelling where the parts join. The spelling rules pages cover dropping e, doubling and changing y to i. For the sounds inside these words, see the phonics word lists.
