Where does arch sit in a word?
A root can come first, last or in the middle. Students who only look at the start of a word miss half of these.
- At the start:
- archenemy, archenemies, archrival, archbishop, archangel
- At the end:
- monarch, monarchs, monarchy, monarchies
How do you teach the root arch?
Start with monarch, since students know kings and queens. Split it on the board: mon means one, arch means rule, so a monarch is one ruler. Then show the other job arch does. At the front of a word it means chief or main. An archenemy is your main enemy, and an archrival is the team you most want to beat. Ask the student to sort a handful of words into two piles, rule or chief, and to say why each one belongs.
A quick routine
Write arch, archy and mon on cards. Say, "Arch means rule or chief. Let's build." The student joins mon and arch, reads monarch, and finishes the sentence "A monarch is..." Swap in archy for monarchy, then add es and change y to i for monarchies. End with archrival: "Which job is arch doing here, rule or chief?" Two minutes, five words.
What do students mix up with arch?
Most words with the letters a-r-c-h have nothing to do with ruling: march, search, starch, parchment and the arch of a bridge. Sound helps at the end of a word, where this root's ch says /k/ (monarch, matriarch). At the front it can go either way: /k/ in archangel and architect, /ch/ in archenemy. So at the front, check the meaning instead. If chief or rule doesn't fit, set the word aside.
Some of these words change spelling where the parts join. The spelling rules pages cover dropping e, doubling and changing y to i. For the sounds inside these words, see the phonics word lists.
