Word family
The -out word family
The answer
The -out word family is every one-syllable word that ends in the rime out, said /out/. Our lexicon has 15 public words in it: 5 with one consonant first, 8 with a blend, 1 with a digraph or silent-letter pair and 1 with no sound before the rime.
What is in this family?
The out family is the vowel sound in cow spelled ou, sitting before t. It follows the ou or ow rule: ou in the middle of a word, ow at the end. The family is full of blends (shout, scout, snout, stout, trout, sprout), so it works as blend practice for students who already know ou. Out itself has no onset at all, the easiest word on the list.

Word ladder: change one sound at a time
Every step is a real word from the list, and each one changes exactly one sound. Say the change aloud before the student writes the new word.
| Step | Word | The change |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | out | start here |
| 2 | bout | add /b/ |
| 3 | rout | change /b/ to /r/ |
| 4 | shout | change /r/ to /sh/ |
| 5 | gout | change /sh/ to /g/ |
| 6 | pout | change /g/ to /p/ |
| 7 | spout | add /s/ |
| 8 | scout | change /p/ to /k/ |
| 9 | snout | change /k/ to /n/ |
| 10 | stout | change /n/ to /t/ |
Rhymes spelled another way
These words rhyme with the family but spell the rime differently, so they belong to other families. Expect students to mix them up when spelling.
| Spelling | Words |
|---|---|
| -oubt | doubt |
| -oute | route |
| -ought | drought |
How do you teach it?
Teach out after ou. Start with out, then one sound before it (bout, pout, tout), then digraphs and blends (shout, scout, trout, sprout).
"The chunk is o-u-t, /out/. Add /sh/: shout. Add /s/ and /k/: scout. Add /s/, /p/ and /r/: sprout. Three sounds before /out/."
What is the common error, and the fix?
Students write "owt" or "showt". The fix is the position rule: this vowel sound before t is spelled ou. Ow comes at the end of a word or before a final n or l.
Sort it: a hands-on activity
Mix out cards with ow cards (cow, how, plow). Students sort by where the vowel sound sits, in the middle or at the end, then by spelling.
How this list was built
Every word comes from our lexicon of about 19,000 common words, each checked against a pronouncing dictionary and split into spelling units. Words a student meets in our assessments and progress-monitoring probes are left out, so practicing a list never rehearses a test. A family is every one-syllable base word (no suffix, not a compound) whose rime, the vowel unit and every unit after it, has the same spelling and the same sounds, so bead and bread are in different families. Ladders use only words from the list, and each step changes exactly one sound.
"Readable after" is the first lesson in the lesson sequence at which our decodability engine finds every sound-spelling in the word taught; "not taught" means the word has a spelling the sequence does not cover, so it is read with help. You can check your own lists and passages with the free decodable text checker.
Questions people ask
How many words are in the -out family?
Our lexicon has 15 one-syllable words ending in out that a student can practice. Words used in our assessments are left out, so a few common words may be missing from the list.
Why is it ou and not ow?
Before t, this vowel sound is spelled ou. Ow is used at the end of a word (cow) or before a final n or l (town, owl).
What is a word ladder?
A chain of real words where each step changes one sound: swap a sound, add one, or take one away. Students say the change before they write it, which trains them to hear every sound in the word.
