Spelling rule
ai or ay: where each spelling goes
The answer
Use ai for long a inside a word or syllable (rain, paint) and ay where a word or syllable ends (play, delay). Our lexicon has 126 base words that follow this position rule and 4 that break it.
When does the rule apply?
English words rarely end in the letter i, so long a at the end of a word cannot be spelled ai. The y takes the i's place, giving ay. That one fact covers most of the rule. Inside a word, before a consonant, ai is the team to use: train, wait, detail. The rule is about position, so it holds in longer words: ay ends a syllable (essay, portray) and ai sits inside one (contain, complaint). Long a has other spellings, like a_e in cake, so the rule only chooses between these two.

Words that break the rule
ay where the rule expects ai
| Word | Why it breaks | Readable after |

| holidays | ay inside the syllable | Lesson 84 |
| nowadays | ay inside the syllable | Lesson 96 |
| mayhem | ay inside the syllable | Lesson 84 |
How do you teach it?
Teach ai and ay together, after silent e. Draw a two-column chart labeled "middle" and "end". Dictate words and have students point to where long a falls before they choose the team. Contrast pairs help: pain and pay, maid and may, trail and tray.
"Spell 'stray'. Where's the long a? At the very end. Nothing comes after it. So we use a-y. Now 'strain'. Long a, then /n/. It's in the middle, with a consonant after it. That's a-i: s-t-r-a-i-n."
What is the common error, and the fix?
The typical errors are "plai" and "rayn". Both are sensible sound spellings in the wrong spot. The fix is to ask where the sound is. If nothing comes after it in the syllable, write ay. If a consonant follows, write ai.
Sort it: a hands-on activity
Mix ai and ay cards from the lists with two decoys spelled with a_e. Students sort by team, then by position, and explain why the a_e words are a third choice the position rule does not cover.
How this list was built
Every word comes from our lexicon of about 19,000 common words, each checked against a pronouncing dictionary and split into spelling units. Words a student meets in our assessments and progress-monitoring probes are left out, so practicing a list never rehearses a test. Rule groups are computed from each word's spelling units and its word sum (base plus suffix), then checked by hand; false word sums such as man + er for manner are removed.
"Readable after" is the first lesson in the lesson sequence at which our decodability engine finds every sound-spelling in the word taught; "not taught" means the word has a spelling the sequence does not cover, so it is read with help. You can check your own lists and passages with the free decodable text checker.
Questions people ask
Why can't ai go at the end of a word?
English words almost never end in the letter i. When a sound at the end would be spelled with i, English switches to y: ai becomes ay, and oi becomes oy.
What are the exceptions?
Our list finds 4: always, holidays, nowadays, mayhem. When a suffix is added, ay can land inside a word (played, payment), but the base word still follows the rule.
Is long a at the end ever spelled other ways?
Yes. Eigh (weigh, sleigh) and ey (they, obey) also spell long a at the end of a word, but ay is far more common: our list has 33 base words with it.
