When to use it

For words where almost nothing is regular, such as one or eye, or when the heart word routine has not made a word stick.

Materials

  • A whiteboard or paper
  • A card for the word

Steps

Shown with example words: heart word one.

  1. Get ready

    1. Show one. Say it, then put it in a short spoken sentence.

  2. I do

    1. Point to each letter as you say its name, then sweep under the word and say it.

Say: One. Letters... then the word: one.

  3. We do

    1. Say the word, spell it aloud and say it again together, three times. Point to the letters as you go.

  4. You do

    1. Cover the word. The student says it, spells it aloud, writes it and says it again.

Student: Says, spells, writes and reads one.

    2. Uncover it. The student checks letter by letter and fixes any error, then writes it once more.

  5. Check

    1. Later in the lesson, show the card for a quick read with no help.

If the student...

  • Leaves out or swaps letters when writing.

Uncover the word. Say the letters together while the student touches each one, cover it again, and have them write it from the beginning.

Tips

  • Use it sparingly. Most words have regular parts worth noticing, and the heart word routine shows them.
  • One to one, have the student trace the word large on the table with a finger while spelling it aloud.
