When to use it
At the start of most lessons once a student has five or more heart words.
Materials
- The student's own deck of heart word cards
Steps
Shown with example words: heart word said.
Get ready
Put new words and words missed last time on top. Add a handful of older ones.
We do
Read the first card together to set the pace.
You do
Show each card. The student reads it within a few seconds.
Student: Reads each heart word on sight.
For each miss, say the word and have the student say and spell it. Put the card back a few cards later.
Check
Make two piles: quick and still learning. Words that are quick three lessons in a row move to the back of the box.
If the student...
Misreads said or takes too long.
Say the word, point to the heart part, have the student read and spell it, and show it again soon.
Say: This is said. Here is its heart part. Read it and spell it.
Tips
- A student who sees their quick pile grow stays keen. Let them count it.
- In a group, use one shared deck of words everyone has learned, and call on students in turn after a group read.
