Steps

Shown with example words: word puzzle; words puzzle, table, little.

  1. Get ready

    1. Show puzzle. Point to the le at the end.

  2. I do

    1. Count back three letters from the end and draw a line. Read the first part, deciding open or closed. Read the ending. Join them.

Say: I count back three: one, two, three. Line. The first part is closed, so the vowel is short. Then the ending. Together: puzzle.

  3. We do

    1. Do the next word together, counting back and reading each part.

  4. You do

    1. The student marks and reads each word in puzzle, table, little.

Student: Counts back three, splits, reads each part, joins them.

  5. Check

    1. Read the list in a new order with no marks.

If the student...

  • Reads the first vowel long in a closed first part, or short in an open one.

Cover the ending. Ask whether the first part is open or closed. Read it together, then add the ending and read the word again.

Tips

  • Put pairs side by side, such as table and dabble, to show why the first part matters.
  • In a group, have students count back aloud together before splitting.
