How do you teach ay words?

Pair ay with ai. "Ay is the end partner. When /ā/ is the last sound, write ay." Read day, say, stay, play, then compound words (daytime, playground) where ay ends the first part. Add -s, -ed and -ing to show that ay stays: plays, played, playing.

What mistake do students make with ay words?

Students write ai at the end (plai) or a alone (pla). Ask, "Is /ā/ the last sound you hear?" If yes, ay. A short ay word family (day, may, say, way, play, stay) is enough for most students to lock in the pattern.

Where do ay words come in the sequence?

Ay is taught with ai at the start of the vowel team unit. In the sequence we use, the pattern is taught in Lesson 84.

Exceptions worth knowing

Says uses ay but says /ĕ/. In words like Sunday and Monday, many speakers reduce the ay. Crayon and mayor put ay before another vowel.

Decodable sentences

Every word in these sentences can be read at Lesson 84 or earlier, or is a heart word taught by then.

  • We can play all day.
  • May I stay?
  • The jay is on the tray.

Questions people ask

What are 5 ay words?
Day, lay, may, pay, say. Those are the five most common of the 214 words where ay says /ā/ in our checked list.
Why do we use ay at the end of words?
English avoids ending words in i, so the /ā/ sound at the end is spelled ay instead of ai.
What are common ay words?
Day, play, say, way, stay, may, today and away.
When can a student read ay words?
Ay words are taught at Lesson 84 in the lesson sequence we use. 172 of the 214 words on this page can be sounded out by then; the rest wait for a pattern taught later, and the tables show the lesson for each word.

How this list was built

Every word comes from our lexicon of common English words, each split into spelling units and checked against a pronouncing dictionary, so a word is listed under the sound its spelling really makes. Words a student sees in our assessments are left out. The readable after lesson comes from our decodability engine, which checks each spelling unit and syllable pattern against the lesson sequence. You can run your own text through the same engine with the free decodable text checker.
