Phonics pattern

Short u words (CVC)

Short u words are CVC words whose vowel says /ŭ/ as in up. Short u is close in sound to short o, so the two are worth practicing side by side.

Spellings: u

How to teach it

  1. Teach /ŭ/ with the letter and a cue: a relaxed mouth and a short sound from the throat, as in up. Say it while writing it.
  2. Build words and chain them (bun, bud, bug, tug), then mix in words with the vowels taught earlier.
  3. Read a list, dictate a few words, and read a sentence that uses short u alongside the other short vowels.

Practice words

Read them across, then down. Point under each word as it is read.

  • bud
  • bun
  • but
  • gum
  • hub
  • jut
  • lug
  • nub
  • pug
  • rut
  • tug
  • tux

Decodable sentences

  • The pug dug in the mud.
  • Gus had a bun and gum.
  • Can you tug the rug?

Spoken warm-ups

No print. Say the prompt; the student answers aloud. Sounds are written between slashes.

Spoken warm-ups for Short u words (CVC)
You sayThe student says
Listen: /b/ /u/ /n/. What word?bun
Say ‘tug’. Say each sound./t/ /u/ /g/
Say ‘hug’. Change /h/ to /m/. What word?mug

Common errors

  • Confusing /ŭ/ and /ŏ/ (tug read as tog). Practice the pair orally first, then sort a few printed words by vowel.
  • Reversing b and d (bud read as dud). Use one consistent cue for b, such as the bat comes before the ball, and point to it.
  • Dropping the vowel in spelling (tg for tug). Have the student say the word slowly and tap one finger per sound before writing.

Which lessons teach this

If you teach UFLI Foundations, this pattern comes up in these 2 lessons. Teach from your own manual.

Questions people ask

Are these words from an assessment?
No. The practice words, sentences and warm-ups here are written for teaching and are kept separate from the words in the Literacy Trail assessments, so practicing never teaches the test.
When is a student ready for short u words?
When they read and spell the pattern before it (short o words) accurately and without prompting, most of the time. Keep reviewing earlier patterns for two minutes a session while the new one settles.
How long should practice take?
A few minutes a day beats one long session a week. Read the word list once or twice, dictate three or four words, and read a sentence or two. Rate how it went and bring the pattern back on a short schedule if it is shaky.
