How to track UFLI Foundations progress across students
UFLI Foundations is a scripted, sequential program, which makes it unusually easy to track well and unusually painful to track badly. This is the method we use, whether you do it in the app or on paper.
In short
Track UFLI Foundations by keeping, for each student, the current lesson in the sequence, a rating after each lesson taught (Needs support, Developing, Secure), and a list of skills to revisit. Literacy Trail has the full lesson sequence set up and does the bookkeeping; the method works on paper too.
What to record after each lesson
- The lesson number and date. This is the record of instruction.
- One rating for the lesson as a whole. Three words are enough: Needs support, Developing, Secure.
- Optionally, the skill concept (the sound or pattern the lesson targets) so review can be by skill rather than by lesson number.
- A short note only when something surprised you.
When to move on and when to review
- Secure: move to the next lesson. Do not linger; the program spirals back.
- Developing: move on, and revisit the skill after a few more lessons. Three is a good default.
- Needs support: teach the next lesson but bring the skill back at the very next session with the program's review routine.
- Two Needs support ratings in a row on the same skill is a signal to slow down or check foundations, not a reason to repeat the whole lesson.
Several students at different points
Each student needs their own place in the sequence. A single class-wide lesson number hides who is behind. If you teach small groups, keep the group's current lesson but rate each student separately; the ratings are where the differences show.
The record parents and schools want
An instruction log (lessons by date) and a progress summary (which skills are secure, which are developing). Both fall out of the records above if you kept them consistently. In the app they print in one click; on paper, a two-column table per month does the job.
Doing it in Literacy Trail
The UFLI Foundations sequence is set up when you start. Choose the lesson each student is on, and Today shows the next one every day. Ratings schedule review, the roadmap shows the sequence, and reports print. If you want to rename or rearrange lessons, make an editable copy and it becomes yours.
